Temporary Disability Benefits (TDB)

Legislated benefits payable to employees for nonoccupational disabilities under TDB laws in certain states.

Temporary Partial Disability

Condition where an injured party's capacity is impaired for a time, however he can continue working at reduced efficiency and full recovery is expected.

Temporary Total Disability

Condition where an injured party is completely unable to work while he is recovering from injury, but recovery is expected.

Ten Day Free Look

Notice, placed prominently on the face page of policy, advising the insured of his right to examine the policy. If dissatisfied, he may return the policy within ten days for a full premium refund and no further obligation.

Tertiary Care

Services provided by providers such as thoracic surgeons, intensive care units, neurosurgeons, etc.

Terminally Ill

Term referring to status of a person who is anticipated to die within 6 months of a specific illness or sickness.

Therapeutic Alternatives

Alternate drugs the chemical contenct of which may be different, but provide the same effect when administered to patients.

Therapeutic Equivalence

Different drugs that control a symptom or illness in exactly the same manner as other drugs used to control that illness.

Third Party Administrator (TPA)

Firm which administers group insurance policies for employers and other associations. In addition to being the liaison between the employer and the insurer, the TPA is involved with certifying eligibility, preparing reports required by the state and processing claims. Use of TPA's has increased with the growth of employer self-funded plans.

Third-Party Payor

Refers to any organization such as Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial insurance companies that are payor for coverages provided by a health plan.

Total Disability

Degree of disability from injury or sickness preventing the insured from performing the duties of any occupation for remuneration or profit. Definition in each specific case depends on the wording in the covering policy.

Travel Accident Insurance

Health Insurance limiting coverage to accidents occurring while the insured is traveling.

Treatment Facility

Residential or nonresidential facility authorized to provide treatment for mental illness or substance abuse.

Triage

Ranking method of sick or injured people according to the severity of sickness or injury to ensure medical and nursing staff facilities are used most efficiently.

Triple Option

Plan giving employees their choice, among different types of providers such as HMO, PPO, or basic indemnity plan. Often, the choice depends on how much they want to pay for the coverage.
